Near to Hong Kong sits Shenzhen. In today's video I head to the Sheraton in Shenzhen, China. It has it's very own private beach. Instead of booking a night I just went to the beach restaurant and spent $30 and stayed for a few hours. I had my Phantom 4 so with permission I had taking some videos and pictures of the beach. 4/21/16 Xiangning Li, visiting professor in architecture at Harvard GSD in spring 2016, will discuss contemporary Chinese architecture in terms of its increasing focus on interior space and matter and the return of “memory.” Can these be understood as critiques of the “iconic turn” the country’s architecture has suffered in recent decades? Is this reaction an antidote to the Western corporate/formalist “virus”? Could it be an interesting argument opposing any conservative response to the internal aim for a “normal” architecture? Xiangning Li is deputy dean and professor of history, theory and criticism at Tongji University College of Architecture and Urban Planning. He has lectured widely on contemporary Chinese architecture and urbanism and published on these topics in international arch...
4/19/16 Liu Yichun, a principal of Atelier Deshaus, will offer a tectonic and symbolic perspective illustrated by some of his architecture firm’s projects, showing how structure can play an ontological role in shaping the intrinsic quality of architecture (primitivity and poetry of space, modernity of interior, etc) in line with the roles of other elements, such as site, light, and surface. Yichun (b. 1969; MArch, Tongji University, 1997) was a guest professor at the College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Tongji University, and at Southeast University School of Architecture. He founded Atelier Deshaus in Shanghai in 2001 with Chen Yifeng and Zhuang Shen. Architecture awards won by Atelier Deshaus include Business Week/Architectural Record China Award (2006) and WA Chinese Architecture...

What is life if not entertaining the possibility of uncertainties at every turn? In this talk, the artist Michael Lee reflects on the research and creative processes of his recent solo exhibition held in Yavuz Fine Art, Singapore, in 2014. The exhibition title, “Machine For Living Dying In”, is a phrase that recalls two definitions of house/home: the first, “A house is a machine for living in” by the Swiss architect Corbusier, in 1927, and the second, “A home is for dying”, by the American architecture professor Douglas Darden in 1997. By allowing the seemingly opposing definitions to co-exist, Lee had aimed to question conventional qualities desired in a home, particularly safety, security, comfort and warmth. The exhibition dealt with the themes of solitary departures; the perils and c...
